Celebrating Differences - Romance Writers Weekly - #lovechatwrite

Welcome to December! We only have three more blog hops in 2024, and we’re starting this month with one that is both serious and simple.

Many cultural and religious holidays are celebrated in December. Discuss the importance and impact of diverse characters and relationships in your stories.

The serious side of this question is that minorities are still incredibly underrepresented in romance. The percentage of books with main characters who are people of colour, have disabilities, or are not straight cissexual does not reflect the real population. Which means it is not reflecting the world we live in in a balanced way.

The simple side of this is how we can change it. As a reader, I search for romances that feature characters of different backgrounds and lifestyles than mine. The best way to support diverse characters and relationships is by purchasing those books. As a writer, I will never be comfortable writing a main character whose life-experience is vastly different than my own, but you can be sure I will populate the story with secondary characters who come from all different ethnicities, orientations, and abilities. After all, I have those people in my world, so why shouldn’t they be in my books?
