Halloween Flash Fiction - Romance Writers Weekly - #lovechatwrite

It’s that time of year again – when the ghouls and goblins come out to play. This week on the blog hop, we’re requested to write a piece of flash fiction including the words ghost, witch, and spooky. Here’s mine!

She gave the ghost of a smile. “I don’t think I’m in the mood to play dress up.”

She looked tired, and I didn’t want to press her too hard. But she used to love Halloween, and I wanted to see her sparkle with fun again.

“Come on,” I cajoled. “You don’t have to go crazy. Dress all in black and wear a pointy hat. Voilà – a witch!”

“Why does this mean so much to you?” She eyed me with a hint of her old attitude. “You never liked Halloween that much.”

I shrugged. “Can’t a person change?” Realizing that also gave her an excuse, I quickly pulled the guilt card. “Nadine wants me to take her trick-or-treating, and is insisting I have a costume, too. I’m going as a spooky nurse. And if I have to go, so do you. It’s what a best friend is for.”

“Keeping someone company while they take their niece door-to-door?” Her smile was a little stronger now, with more than glimmer of wryness.

I nodded firmly. “Yes. It’ll be like old times.” From kindergarten to Grade Nine, when we finally decided we were too mature to beg for candy, we’d raced from house to house together. These last weeks had been tough on her, but I would drag her back to normal and use every weapon in my arsenal to do it.

She sighed. “I think I have a witch’s hat somewhere.”

I suppressed a fist pump. I doubted one night escorting a nine-year-old Cinderella on a candy quest would fix everything that ailed my best friend. But I would take what I could get.
