When you read a romance, you know you’re reading a story with a happy ending. In fact, that’s the only real rule about romance – that the people who fall in love make a lasting commitment to each other at the end of the story.

But the way the characters get to that happy ending are many and varied. Stories can take place in the city or in space, in the far off future or distant past, in the quiet of an Amish community or the viciousness of a mafia family. You get the idea! And then within larger sub-genres you’ll find sub-sub-sub genres. The options are endless, and that’s what we’re talking about on this week’s blog hop:

What sub-genres have you written in? Does it have any particular challenges?

All my stories are contemporary romances, which means they are set in the present day. Many of them are later-in-life or seasoned because they have characters 30-years-old or more. These are my two main sub-genres.

But the sub-genre I have the most fun – and the most difficulty – with is romantic suspense.

As you may guess, that’s the sub-genre that involves murder and mayhem. A lot of romantic suspense novels involve law enforcement agents, but I’ve always been partial to ordinary people caught in extra-ordinary circumstances. The closest I’ve written to a police officer is my hero in When Time Falls Still, who is a security guard at a university.

The tricky part with romantic suspense (for me) is designing a mystery that complements but doesn’t overwhelm the romance. And one that the reader won’t figure out ten pages in!
