What Writers Read - Romance Writers Weekly - #lovechatwrite

Before I get to the blog topic this week, I just want to say Happy 58th Anniversary to my mom and dad. Congratulations and thanks for being such amazing parents.

This week on the Romance Writers Weekly, the question is pretty easy for me to answer.

Do you usually read the same genre that you write? Why or why not?

It may surprise you to learn I do not usually read in the same genre I write, which is steamy, later-in-life, contemporary romance. That’s not to say I never read that genre. I have to, in order to keep up with what’s happening in the industry. But I often find, especially when I am in the middle of writing a new book, that I have to read outside the genre in order to “cleanse my palate.”

I also believe it is important to read outside my genre because it keeps me from losing sight of the wider world. It so easy to become hyper-focused and miss out on new and exciting advances in other areas.

Right now, I am re-reading the Lord Peter Wimsey’s mysteries. While investigative techniques have certainly changed over the century since they were originally written, that doesn't stop me from loving the characters as much as I ever did. Great stories are about the people (real or imagined) and that will never change.
